Do I need to be a "real" runner to participate?
No! This is a fun family friendly event! It is self-timed and a fundraiser to support our locals schools and Girls on the Run in Homer! You can walk or run! Push a stroller or wiggle your way to the finishline. We just ask no bikes and no doggies for course safety. :-)
What is included with my registration?
Your registration includes access to the course, a race bib and a Summer Color Burst silicone bracelet. T-shirts will be available at the start and finishline for $15.00 (2XL and above, $18.00) until we run out. We will also have sunglasses available for purchase only for one dollar!
Where does my registration go?
Proceeds from Summer Color Burst 5K registrations and event sales will benefit our local elementary schools PTO/PTA's and Girls on the Run programs.
The Homer Area PTA/PTOs help fund student field trips every year, along with artists in schools, after school activities, teacher and classroom needs and special requests (ie. book fair, science fair, art fair, writers fair, etc).
If you are interested in donating to Girls on the Run of Greater Alaska in Homer specifically, please donate at: http://giving.girlsontherun.org/girls-on-the-run-greater-alaska/donate-to-GOTR
Any donation large or small makes a difference. We appreciate your support!
Can children participate?
Yes! Under 5 run free but must register with a parent or guardian at packet-pick up or on race day. They must be accompanied at all times on the race course. Strollers are welcome (we will try our best not to get powder on them but prepared just in case!)
Can I run with my dog?
For the safety of our runners and animal friends, no pets will be allowed on the course (even though we love them!).
Can I get my race packet before race day?
Yes! Packet pick-up is at Ulmers Drug and Hardward from 2:00-6:00 pm on Friday May, 19th, 2017. Get your stuff in advance and avoid race day lines.
How will I get the color powder on me?
As you run along the course, you will see "color chutes" - run through a chute and you will get color powder thrown all over you by our amazing volunteers! Wear clothing that you don't mind getting stained (even though it should wash out) and sunglasses for your eyes if you want! We will have sunglasses for sale at the start and face masks available to any runner who wants one.
Will I get my car interior dirty after the race?
We suggest bringing a couple towels and a change of clothes, just in case!
Is the color powder safe?
The color powder used is a combination of non-toxic cornstarch and food coloring made by local volunteers. That is it! It is ground to a very fine powder and floats in the air. As with anything, you want to keep it out of your eyes and our color station volunteers will not throw powder above the neck. Some runners choose to protect themselves with glasses, googles and face coverings (i.e. masks/bandanas).
Is the Summer Color Burst 5K timed?
The Summer Color Burst 5K is not a timed event. Take your time and enjoy the course!
What if I am pregnant?
That decision is between the runner and her doctor. Pregnant runners are advised to consult thier physician prior to participating in the Summer Color Burst 5K.
What happens if there is bad weather?
It depends on the weather but we are committed to running the race! Anticipate the race to happen - rain or shine! Homer, Alaska weather is variable and we cannot always count on a bright sunny day. Plus - a little rain will make for some fun pictures and lots of laughs!
